Not every dental problem needs same-day attention. A same-day appointment exists for pain and damage that can't wait, not for things that are inconvenient.

So what counts? A true emergency usually involves one of these:

• Sharp or throbbing tooth pain that won't ease up with over-the-counter medicine
• A tooth that's cracked, chipped, or broken, especially if it's sharp or affecting your bite
• A crown or filling that's come loose or fallen out completely
• A knocked-out tooth from a fall, sports injury, or accident
• Swelling in the gum or face that's new or getting worse

When someone calls describing one of these, it's genuinely urgent. We can hear it in how they describe it. A dull ache that's been there for a week is different from pain that woke you up at 2am. Both deserve care, but only one needs to jump the line.

Here's where we're straight with you. If you're overdue for a routine cleaning or you've been meaning to ask about whitening, that's not a same-day situation. We won't pretend it is. Save that for a regular appointment. Same-day scheduling is reserved for genuine dental emergencies. That means sudden pain, a broken tooth, or a lost filling or crown that needs eyes on it now.

When Same-Day Care Isn't Necessary

Maybe you noticed some sensitivity to cold drinks a few days ago. Or you've got mild soreness that comes and goes. That's usually not an emergency. A routine exam or a regular cleaning visit handles that kind of thing just fine. Same story if you're overdue for a cleaning and your gums feel a bit tender. That's a hygiene conversation, not a same-day one. If a crown or veneer feels off but isn't loose, painful, or broken, it can wait for a regular appointment. We'll look at it properly and plan any adjustment without rushing.

Here's a simple gut check we tell people all the time. Can you eat, sleep, and go about your day without the tooth controlling your attention? Then you probably don't need urgent care today. Save same-day scheduling for the moments that demand it, like sudden sharp pain or a broken or knocked-out tooth. That also includes a lost filling or crown that's left something exposed.

But loading up the same-day schedule with non-urgent requests slows things down for someone who's genuinely in pain that day. What to Expect During a Same-Day Visit at WM Dentistry   

You call, you describe what's going on, and our team gets you on the schedule the same day. That's the short version. Here's what happens once you walk in.

We start with a focused exam, not a full workup. If you're in pain or have a broken tooth, the first goal is to figure out what's happening. Then we stop the pain before anything else. Dr. Jeremy Morgan will look at the tooth or area you're worried about and take an X-ray if needed. He'll walk you through what he's seeing in plain language. No jargon, no runaround.

From there, one of two things happens. Some issues get handled right then. A lost filling, for example, or a small chip that needs bonding, can often be addressed in that same visit. Other issues need a plan first. A cracked molar with deeper damage, or something that looks like it might need a root canal, is different. The same-day visit becomes about diagnosis and pain relief, with treatment scheduled as a follow-up.

Either way, you leave knowing what's wrong and what happens next. We're not going to send you home guessing.

Bring whatever you've got, insurance card, list of medications, or nothing at all. That's fine if you're coming straight from work or from wherever the pain started. Emergencies don't wait for you to get organized. We don't expect you to show up prepared like it's a routine cleaning.
